Helping children who are living with domestic abuse

We can’t always stop the abuse, but we can help their minds and emotions.

Domestic Abuse

CHILDREN ARE THE, TOO OFTEN FORGOTTEN, VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Children are victims of domestic abuse when they are in the same home where it is happening. This can be very frightening and distressing for a child and can cause serious psychological harm. Children can experience domestic abuse when they see or hear the abuse, or violence, or by witnessing their parents’ injuries.

Children who have witnessed domestic abuse will experience a variety of emotions, including:

  • Becoming withdrawn
  • Feeling and displaying anger
  • Lacking confidence
  • Feeling afraid
  • Health and/or sleeping problems
  • Being unable to cope at school

About Me

I have over 20 years service as a police officer. Specialising in child protection, I often felt frustrated as I dealt with domestic abuse cases, where children were too often the forgotten victims.

Several years ago, I went home from work one evening, frustrated and upset with my inability to help three children who we knew were living in a home where they were regularly exposed to domestic abuse, but like many, they were too afraid to speak out.

I began questioning whether I was in the right job and found myself searching for ways to assist children who are trapped in difficult situations. As a result, I started creating a fictional story that portrays the experiences of children who are forced to live with domestic abuse.

Through the eyes of an eleven-year-old protagonist, I found a way to offer coping mechanisms that can help children distract themselves during the traumatic moments when they hear the abuse from another room.

These techniques form the basis of my debut book, which provides a means of escape and redirects the reader’s thoughts long after they’ve finished reading. Both children and adults will enjoy and benefit from these fictional stories.

The content of my writing is solely derived from my own general experiences and is not based on any specific individuals, families, or incidents/cases that I have encountered. Any resemblance to real-life persons is entirely coincidental.

Where I am unable to directly help children get out of their abusive homes, my intention is to do all I can to help them cope whilst they are in it. For this reason, it is my goal is to ensure that young people have access to these valuable coping mechanisms..

I am thrilled to announce that the second book of the series has just been released. It centres on court procedures, told through a fictional narrative.

I am currently writing the third and final instalment of my fictional “Frangel trilogy.” It is filled with exciting twists and turns that I am confident will captivate my readers.
